But it seems to me, that the 'Add any gadget by URL' Lab is being deprecated. https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/gmail/UE5G_nSIvMs Is it possible to install the Gmail Gadget in an alternative way?

Unfortunately, no. Google has discontinued this feature. However, you can try using our "Bookmarklet" instead which does a similar thing and may work for you.
