Help: Multiple Chores for Multiple Children

Greetings,

We just purchased Toodledo and was wondering how best to list out various chores (e.g., morning chores, meal clean-up) for different children.

We want to be able to switch these assignements by week or month but it does not seem as though you can do that.

Further, it does not seem as though you can sort by two different criteria (by chore and/or child).

Can anyone help with this or point us to the help topic which may be useful?

Thank you!

You could use a number of different fields to associate particular tasks with particular children. The two most obvious choices to me seem like they would be either Tag or Folder. If you used Folders, you could set up a Folder for each child, and then select from the names from a dropdown menu when creating or editing tasks. Tags are entered freeform, so there is no setting up, or dropdown box. You can select your "Fields & Functions Used" (like Folder or Tag) in your Account Settings. Either way, you will be able to sort by multiple criteria (like task name and Folder or Tag). Just click "Sort" above the task list to set your criteria, and then click "Sort".

Another idea is to create a context for each child. Then create a Chores folder. Here you will see a list of all the chores and who they are assigned too.

When you need to switch who takes out the trash, you simple change the context to the new child.

This will allow you to work from one folder but have the flexibility of rotating what child is responsible for that week or day.

Proximo's suggestion is also good. I almost mentioned Context as well, but didn't want to overwhelm Tom with options. This page has brief descriptions of these fields: http://www.toodledo.com/info/details.php
But the uses mentioned there are suggestions only. You can use these fields for whatever purpose you find the most helpful in getting organized.

There is no way to have a task automatically switch between children at regular intervals whether you use Tags, Folders, or Contexts. However, depending on the type of chores you are talking about (daily chores rotating weekly, weekly chores rotating monthly, etc.), there are some ways you could set them up to work automatically using task Cloning and making clever use of the repeat field. If you could give some more detail, someone could probably help you figure that out as well.

Thank you for your responses!

Would you be able to tell me how to "create a context"?

On the left sidebar, there is an option that says "Folders & Contexts". Just click on Contexts. If that is not there, you will have to enable the Context field under "Fields & Functions Used" in your Account Settings.
