On the website, each tab shows a number that indicates how many tasks are inside. Our iOS app has the same feature, in addition to the option to take one of these numbers and have it appear as a badge on the application's icon.
These numbers may sometimes not match. This is usually because your filters are different between the website and the iOS device. The website does not know about the filters you have set on the device, so the badge update sent from the website will be with no filters applied.
The application badge updates when you run the app. You can also use Apple's Push Notification network to have the badge updated periodically throughout the day.
Occasionally, the device and the website may get out of sync, which will cause the numbers to not match anymore. You can fix this by doing a resync.
If you would prefer for the website to not send badge updates to your device, you can go into Apple's Settings app and then go to the "Notifications" section. Find Toodledo and turn the "Badge" switch off.
