Note for Repeating Task without copying note forward

Newbie question.

We mark tasks complete and want to annotate that with a short note. For example: "pages 15-18".

But don't want "pages 15-18" to be copied forward with the repeating task.

How is that best done. The approach we're fumbling with involves re-finding a completed already copied task and notating it, but that involves turning the show recently completed tasks setting on and off.

What is the best way to individually annotate a repeating task?

It will probably be a bit messy no matter how you solve it. Here is one way:

Regard your repeating task as a kind of "reminder task" only. When it comes up you create a new non-repeating task and check off the repeating task immediately.

Later, when you have done your reading, you can add whatever comments you like, or even change the name of the non-repeating task (if you want to see the page numbers without opening the notes field).

Thank you.

Ugh. So the key is waiting until the task is actually repeated for a future date before adding a note to the current date.

Well, there could be better ways ...

... but no, that is not what I meant:

Let's say you are repeating the "reminder task" weekly. Everytime it repeats you start a non-repeating task which you probably won't check for off about a week or so. This "current" task you could add things to all week long if you like, and then eventually check it off.

When the repeating "reminder task" shows up again you start a new non-repeating task for the next chapter (or whatever it is) of the book, and can start adding comments to that one too.

If you do not finish your chapters quickly enough you could end up having more than one chapter current at the same time, if that is what you would like. Or you could postpone the date of the reminder if it comes much too early.

I agree it is not an elegant solution, but I doubt that an elegant one exists. But let us hope someone else has a better idea.

Currently, the note of a repeating task is carried forward to the new version. If you want to annotate completed versions of tasks for archival purposes, you will need to find the completed task in the "recently completed" section and update the note there.

At what point does a completed repeating task that is marked complete get copied and carried forward to a new version? Is there some button we can hit that makes sure the completion is executed, so that we know we can update the completed task's note field without it getting carried forward?

The completed task will have Repeat set to "None".

A repeating task is carried forward the instant you check it off. You'll need to refresh the list to find the new version.

This sounds like a good candidate for a custom search. Each view in TD (Main, Folder, Search.. etc) retains its own unique Show settings. Always keep your Search view settings to "Show Completed Tasks", since you can control this setting in each saved search with the "Checked off =" criteria.

Create a custom search, where (Checked off = Yes), and (Date Completed is Today). You could filter it some more with unique text in the Task Description if possible. Then all you need to do after checking off is hop over to your saved search and edit the completed task from there.

Okay, let me put this another way.

Use Case: Annotating a repeating task.

We have a daily repeating task.

We want to annotate that task (Like "Edited Pages 100-180")
Mark it complete.
And have next day's task ready to do the same tomorrow.

What are the exact mouse clicks / keypress to accomplish this.

We're ending up with no note in the task just completed. And sometimes the text we wanted for today's note ending up in tomorrow's instead. argh.

Is there a plan to make this work any better? If so when?

This is the step you need to change.

First, mark it as complete, then go to your Completed Tasks and find the task, then add the Note.

And, yeah, it is awkward. ;(

Personally, I would maintain a running history in the note of the active, repeating task:

11/12/2011 Edited pages 1-10
11/13/2011 Edited pages 11-20

etc, etc...
