Tried most all the fields I'm using, and got it to sort on all but Importance. Don't know what I did to prevent it from sorting on Priority before.

Sounds nice! Unfortunately, neither Bi-directional sorting or Locations are working on my computer here at work. Bidir sort just doesn't work, when I click on the Sort button, the Sort bar displays or hides, same as before.
When I try to set my location manually, I just get an "Error on Page" message at the bottom of my browser. Maybe it's because we're stuck with an old version - IE 7.0.5730.13? EDIT: Went back and tried the bi-directional sorting again, this time with a Due Date sort, and it worked. I had tried it sorting on Priority and Importance, so I gather it only works on date-based criteria? This message was edited Aug 25, 2010. |

I'm backchecking to see when I finished a project. I'd like to be able to see what date I marked the tasks and the project done. Is there any way to do this?

I agree 100%. I like this feature, but find the defaults cluttered, and also limiting. For example, my tasks often involve waiting for parts to arrive, so I would like an "Ordered" status. The customizable Context fields work very well. Maybe it could be like that? Pardon if this is a stupid question, but isn't that kind of like the status "Waiting"? |

It's in the start date and due dates field. Of course, you have to be in the Pro version to get individual 15 min interval reminders. The free version only gives you the option to have a reminder of all your Hotlist items sent in the morning.
Of course, you have to set them up in Reminders, which is under "Tools and Services". Best of luck. |

The most obvious thing that comes to mind is the notebook. You can enter notes there, and they can be placed in your regular folders, or not. I believe notes appear in reverse chronological order, which is how I'd want them. YMMV.

I'm using Toodledo Me Too which puts the tags/folders/searches vertically down the left side and it works fine in multiline mode on my iMac. Maybe you're on Windoze?

It is very frustrating to use, there is no user manual to help with the basic features. I would be willing to pay to have someone see if could meet my needs but right now it is just too much work for too little reward. It would really help if you could have a select box that you could select a bunch of items and then multi edit all of the tasks that are selected vs having to do a search which means that you have to have something to search on. Do I need to do anything to make sure that my account is not automatically renewed. I would just like it to expire. I want to get things done, not mess with the tool all day long. I have 430 tasks and right now it seems that I would have to spend 2 days editing them to get value out of this tool. The tool gets in the way of getting thing done. Considering just going back to paper. Any other suggestions on a tool. I was once told that you can have a tool that is Fast, Powerful and easy to use but that you could only chose two of those. Toodl just seems powerful, working with it is tedious and it is certainly not easy to use. Steve I agree with you in part, I don't consider TD an "easy to use" task manager, compared to many others. But none of the "others" do all that TD does. I also don't consider TD a beginner level task manager. Not that a sharp beginner couldn't start out using TD in a rather basic way and gradually move up as s/he learned. That being said, I don't think TD is difficult to use. There's just a lot there, and like any other advanced level app, it takes some time and effort to get it down. You've been around just about a year, which should be enough time. Of course, being a member of the forums for a year doesn't mean you've been actively using TD that long. My entry date is over a year ago, but I've only been using TD seriously for 5 weeks. Still, I've got TD almost nailed down in that time. I'm still making minor adjustments, but I think I've pretty much got what I want. By using the Help screens and asking a lot of questions in the forums, I've about got it. The support here is great, especially compared to some other task management forums I've frequented. I certainly haven't seen better. I suspect there's more going on here than just your frustration over working with TD. Might I suggest that blaming the hammer when the nails aren't going in straight won't help? You mention above that you have 430 tasks. If they're all yours, not delegated, you're simply in way over your head and no task manager is going to help with that. Even GTD won't help with that. From what I understand, it just gives you a method to figure out what needs to be done today from however a long list of tasks you might have. It doesn't deal with those who simply have an impossible number of tasks in the first place. I don't know if this will suit your needs, but I've been using a new (to me) methodology called "Zen to Done". Don't worry, you don't have to be a Buddhist to use it. It's just about simplifying your life and getting down to those things that are most important to you. You don't have to meditate or hang prayer flags. If interested, its at: http://zenhabits.net/zen-to-done-ztd-the-ultimate-simple-productivity-system/ Just a suggestion. If it doesn't suit, I leave you with this thought: "Beware the barrenness of a busy life." -- George Verwer Best of luck. This message was edited Aug 23, 2010. |

For instance you would rarely get an upvote from helping someone. And often you would get downvoted from people hating some of your other post, For example, I've just been downvoted for writing a tips/tricks with this account. Interesting. I've only been in these forums on a regular basis since mid July, and have helped out a handful of users with that little I know, and noticed my rating went up last week to "helpful". I suspect that it takes a lot of negatives to get to being banned, but I don't know how the rating system works. What I find much more curious than you being banned, is you keep coming back merely to criticize an app you've quit using. Sorry for asking, but I am curious. Do you have a life? |

I don't mind that it takes a little time to set TD up. It makes up for it by being so powerful, and my experience is that the more flexible and powerful software is, the more time I have to invest in it to optimize my use of it. Once it's setup, it works very well for me.
Of course, YMMV. But if I found myself doing "time wasting contortions", I'm move on, try something more to my liking. |

I tried doing that, but I can only assign so many tags (limited by total number of characters, I believe) to a task. If I want to create more tags this way, do I have to have another "tag" task? Any other suggestions?
|
Salgud |
Doh! I've been using tags, and did, of course, did see the tags in the box. Just didn't realize it was called a "tag cloud" because the other tag clouds weren't linear, as is this one. Since they're sized and ordered according to frequency of use, which I did notice, it does qualify as a "cloud". It's just a square cloud. :)

I didn't know TD had a tag cloud. How do you display it?

In a word, no. Some of our more experienced users might have suggestions for workarounds.

If all you've tried is the "Hide Future Tasks" filter, it may not give you what you want. I think it's threshold is one month.
Have you tried creating a Saved Search? Should be able to control it based on Start Date or Due Date or whatever. Also, have you looked at "How can I hide tasks that are due in the future?" in the help screens? (Just search help for "future"). You can certainly get just about any time-based criteria you want using a Saved Seach. For many of us, that's our default page, not the Main page. HTH |

Seems to me that TD is improving just fine. They upgrade at least once a month, sometimes more. I imagine they're spending a lot of effort to get the iPhone version more aligned with the web version right now, which might be taking time away from the web version development.
As for developers spending time in these forums answering questions, I can see where an "efficiency expert" type would think that a waste of time. They could be writing code instead. But for those capable of looking a little deeper, keeping the developers in contact with their clients is brilliant. They know what the clients are asking for, and what, and even how, their clients think. Some might say they could be briefed on this, but it's not the same. Having an online dialog is very different that getting a 5 min briefing throught the filter of someone else saying what he thinks the clients are saying. Richard Branson, billionaire owner of Virgin Airlines, occasionally goes unannounced on one of their flights, and serves his customers alongside his flight crew. He says he learns things about what his people deal with and what his customers want and need better that way than anything else. I want to applaud the TD staff and management, if there are such, for keeping themselves in touch with us, their customers, on a regular basis. After putting up with the deafening silence in the Culured Code forums for years, the frequent, knowledgeable, and friendly replies to my posts by TD staff makes me a believer. These people want to deliver the best experience they can. I couldn't ask for more, and certainly wouldn't be foolish enough to ask for less. |

I think there must be something else involved, because I tried to duplicate your problem and didn't get the same result. I created a task, gave it a priority of 2, a start day of today, and a due date tomorrow. It showed on my Hotlist. Unless you've changed your hotlist defaults, they have a minimum priority of 2 and a due date before tomorrow. Start date should be irrelevant if the task meets the other criteria.
Have you changed your default Hotlist criteria in Settings? Does your task mee the criteria? Is the problem replicable? This message was edited Aug 18, 2010. |
