How do repeating tasks work?
When you create a task you can specify many different ways for it to repeat once you complete it. When a task repeats, both the start-date and due-date will be moved forward by the specified amount. There are several simple options that you can quickly select from a drop down menu.
When you create a task you can specify many different ways for it to repeat once you complete it. When a task repeats, both the start-date and due-date will be moved forward by the specified amount. There are several simple options that you can quickly select from a drop down menu.
- Daily: It will repeat every day.
- Weekly: It will repeat on the same day of the week (eg., every friday).
- Biweekly: It will repeat on the same day, every other week (eg., every other friday).
- Monthly: It will repeat on the same day of the month (eg., every 16th).
- Bimonthly: It will repeat on the same day, every other month (eg., every other 16th).
- Quarterly: It will repeat on the same day, every 3 months (eg., March 16th would repeat on June 16th).
- Semiannually: It will repeat on the same day, every 6 months (eg., March 16th would repeat on Sept 16th).
- Yearly: It will repeat on the same day every year (eg., every March 16th).
If one of the above simple options does not suit your needs, you can click the "advanced options" link and type in how you want the task to repeat. Toodledo recognizes 3 different formats for advanced repeating
- Format 1: "Every X T". Where X is a number and T is a unit of time (day/week/month/year). Examples: Every 3 days, Every 1 month, Every 2 years, Every 16 weeks.
- Format 2: "On the X D of each month". Where X is a number or numerical word (first, second, last, etc) and D is a day of the week (Mon, Tue, Wed, etc). Examples: On the second monday of each month, On the last Fri of each month, On the 3 Sat of each month.
- Format 3: "Every W". Where W is a day of the week (Mon, Tue, Wed, etc) or the special words "weekend" or "weekday". Examples: Every Mon, Every Tuesday and Thursday, Every Weekend, Every Weekday, Every Mon, Wed and Fri.
Additionally, you have the option of selecting whether you want the task to repeat from the due date or from the completion date.
- From Due-date: The task will be moved forward from the due-date, even if this due-date is overdue or in the future. For example, suppose you have a task that repeats weekly and is overdue by 6 days. When you complete this task, it will be moved forward from the due-date and the new due date willl be tomorrow.
- From Completion: The task will be moved forward from the current date. For example, suppose you have a task that repeats weekly and is overdue by 6 days. When you complete this task, it will be moved forward from today and the new due date will be in 7 days.
If you want to change how a task repeats, you will need to make the change to the current uncompleted task. Altering an old completed instance of this task will not work.
If a task does not have a due-date, it will be repeated from the start-date. If a task has neither a due-date nor a start-date, then it will be repeated from the completion date.
