Why are there due date modifiers?

It seems to me that the due date modifiers are superfluous and they could be replaced by using start dates instead. Due after e.g. May 4th could be replaced by start date May 5th. Due on May 4th by start date May 4th and due by May 4th. The only one that seems to have a justification is optional on. That one I rather like though.

It seems to me that including these modifiers muddles the hide future tasks filter.

Yes, you can accomplish the same thing in two different ways. This was done for historical reasons because we initially did not have start-dates (8 years ago) so we had just the due-date modifiers and then added the start-dates later and couldn't take away the modifiers because many people used them. You are free to use whichever method you prefer.
