How to turn off notifications on my desktop?

I am annoyed by the daily onslaught of growl-type notifications on my desktop. They don't disappear unless I individually dismiss each one. I have tried for hours to figure out how to turn off the alerts. Does anyone have any suggestions?

From the "Tools" menu select "Alarms" and then remove the "Browser" option.

There is no alarm set in my Tools/alarm settings.

I set it for email alerts hoping that the browser ones will stop.
