"Login failed" in iPhone app

iPhone app inexplicably stopped syncing and was trying to force me to re-login - no matter what I do now, I get "Login failed - please check your e-mail and password" - I have tried everything I can think of, including:
-changing password on website, making sure that works, then entering that password in app - no good
-deleting and re-installing iPhone app - no good
-waiting til the following day, double-checking that website password works, then trying to login multiple times in app - no go
(iPhone 5 with latest iOS, latest app version)
