Windows 7 security

I want this installation to be as streamlined as possible, meaning avoiding the use of third party utilities as much as possible. I've always used third party firewall and antivirus programs instead of Window's own, but I'm wondering if that's really necessary. What is the consensus regarding the quality and security of Windows 7 native firewall and other security software?

I've used the Windows firewall on Vista and Win7 and never had a problem. I always purchase a third-party antivirus program though - I've seen the Windows free one get breached on a computer at our office.
