I tried re-creating the problem with the [email protected] account but no luck. I can't get it to freeze. My regular account has an initial view of folder.php and it shows All Tasks, Sorted by Context, no filters. I create a bunch of fake tasks in [email protected] as well as a couple of Contexts and set the sort method to Context. But, it lets me in just fine. If you have any other ideas, I'm more than happy to try and test.

That is useful information. It means that the problem is with something internal to your Toodledo account, and is not related to a particular Firefox configuration. We'll try a few things differently now and see what we come up with.

Thanks

I also had this problem, after enabling Location. After numerous attempts in Firefox, I launched toodledo in IE without problem and then went back to Firefox and suddenly it all worked fine. Perhaps it cleared something in my account ? I unchecked Location though, just to be on the safe side.

One user just reported in a support ticket that reinstalling Firefox solved her problem, so perhaps it is a Firefox configuration problem after all. We are still investigating. I am sorry that we have been unable to find the problem. It appears to be only be affecting a very small fraction of Firefox users.

I just completely uninstalled then reinstalled Firefox 3.6.8 and it DID NOT solve the problem - no change.

It can't be related to a particular user's account if using IE works but Firefox doesn't (as in my case).

Same observation here: when I use Google Chrome it just breezes through the sign-in process without a hitch.

@Jean
"something internal to your Toodledo account"
mean that if you can log into another clean account (like Corbin) it must be something that is configured differently in yours or for example a character in your task that Firefox can't handle.

If Firefox crash It is definitely a Firefox problem. It should be able to handle every error without crashing.

I suggest you try with this (It will not affect your current firefox) : http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable
and below are links to older versions of Firefox Portable.

If you were all to copy/paste this part of http://www.toodledo.com/account_edit.php ...

Default View: Main edit
New Task Defaults: Status: Someday
Reminder: 1 day
edit
Fields/Functions Used: Folder, Context, Goal, Due Date, Due Time, Repeat, Length, Timer, Priority, Tag, Status, Star, Location, Trashcan edit
Subtasks: Subtasks Enabled with Manual sorting edit
............... ... ... ect

We could see revealing similarities.

Then at last xml-backup / delete / restore your tasks.

That's all you can do.

Except that Firefox isn't crashing, it's hanging for a fixed period of time and then starting up again. The behavior began when the last update was to the site was released, which indicates that even if it is a Firefox bug, it's being triggered by something that changed in Toodledo.

I happened to have a portable install of Firefox 4.0 Beta 1 on my desktop, and it's behaving in exactly the same way. When I load my default view (context.php, sorted by Importance and Priority), the entire browser freezes up for around five minutes, then continues as normal.

One additional data point: on both 3.6.8 and 4.0b1, the browser consistently freezes after the task list is populated, with the "clear" star icon (starno.gif) showing on all un-starred tasks, but before any of the other icons are shown ("importance" warning triangle, checkbox, yellow star, "actions" Lego brick, add-note, note, "drag" hand, "reminder" bell, etc.). If those icons are dynamically set after the tasks are downloaded and displayed, the hangup may be caused by the code that decides which icons to show for each task.

Is it possible to create an alternate version of context.php, with some debugging statements that output to the error console?

We have still not been able to replicate the problem, and we are starting to get confused by the different things that different people have tried. I have made a list of questions and steps to take. If a few of you with the problem could try all of these steps, and report back with all the results, that would be very helpful for us.

1) What OS are you running?
2) What version of Firefox?
3) Does Firefox only hang once and then works perfectly after it recovers?
4) Does Firefox hang only when signing into the website by pressing the "Sign in" button, or does it also hang after you are already signed in.
5) When Firefox hangs, can you refresh the page? Does it help, or does it hang again?
6) Can you sign into our mobile website and use it without problems ( http://www.toodledo.com/slim )?
7) If you delete all your Toodledo cookies and then restart your browser and then sign in again, does it still hang?
8) If you open the "Tools > Error Console" before visiting Toodledo, do you see any errors appear during the hang?
9) Pro members only. If you access the site via SSL encryption ( https://www.toodledo.com/views/index.php ) do you get the same problem?
10) If you directly type in the URL for these forums ( http://www.toodledo.com/forums/ ) do you still get Firefox to hang?
11) If you create a new empty Toodledo account using a fake email address, does that cause Firefox to hang?

I know that this may take 10 minutes to go through, but it will be very helpful if a few of you could do these steps. And please do the actual steps instead of going from memory because we need accurate answers for the current settings/configuration.

Thanks!

1. XP Pro 2002 SP3.
2. Firefox 3.6.8 and 4.0b1.
3. Generally speaking, yes, but see 5.
4. Hangs if site is loaded when I'm already signed in.
5. When Firefox hangs the entire browser is locked down solid until the issue resolves itself (~5-6 minutes for me). Can't refresh during this period, obviously. After Ffx unfreezes, a soft-reload (reload button or Crtl-R) does not cause a refreeze, but a shift-reload does.
6. "Slim" site works fine. [in Firefox]
7. Ffx still hangs on load after clearing cookies/cache, restarting, and loading the task list.
8. Yes, warnings about views_print9.css 'text-overflow' property, followed by five "$A is not defined" errors (prototype.js line 1323) displayed immediately before freeze. No error console activity during freeze (Error Console is frozen just like the main browser window), nor after the freeze lifts.
9. index.php no, https://www.toodledo.com/views/context.php yes.
10. No. Ffx has never hung for me on the forums.
11. No.

1) Windows 7 Home Premium 32 Bit
2) Firefox 3.6.8
3) Whenever I go to http://www.toodledo.com/views/folder.php, it says Loading... where the tasks are. However, the browser freezes and I see the Windows Circle "waiting" icon so cant control Firefox. Windows is not crashed and can use other programs e.g. Chrome. If I click in Firefox, it says (Not Responding) at the top and Fireox all fades a part transparent white colour.

4) If I go to www.toodledo.com, it redirects to http://www.toodledo.com/views/folder.php and then all freezes. CPU usage goes for Firefox goes to 50% so its trying to do something.

5) Since Firefox has completely frozen, cant click on anything.

6) Toodledo.com/slim works fine on iPhone. The ToodleDo iPhone app also works fine

7) Removed all toodledo cookies, went to toodledo.com and logged in. First seems Ok as can see tasks but then get the Windows 7 swirling circle waiting thing. Click on Firefox on page a couple times and then it goes all transparent white again and says (Not responding) at the top.

8) Firefox freezes so cant see all the errors but all 17 I can see on console are warning and say:

Unknown property 'text-overflow'. Declaration dropped.
http://images.toodledo.com/t/includes/views39.css

This I can see about 10 times.

There is similar error

Unknown property 'text-overflow'. Declaration dropped.
http://images.toodledo.com/t/includes/views_print9.css

The Lines in code the views39.css error happens (the ones I can see in console as the scroll bar extends a lot more are):

142
171
174
233
234
235
236
237

For views_print9.css the ones I can see are lines

205
206
207
208
209
210

(There are properly more)

9) Not a pro member

10) Visiting http://www.toodledo.com/forums/ in Firefox works fine. So does going to other sections including History, Files, Nookbooks.

11) Creating a test account with a blank task list it loads fine. Added a couple tasks and its still fine. Made one of the tasks have an alert and still fine.

I am unable to run the sequence of checks properly until later today but will try at my earliest opportunity and let you know the results.

However a couple of interim points:
I am using Vista OS
Firefox freezes as per Andrew's description (step 3) but I have never seen it recover. Maybe I haven't waited long enough but I always have to crash Firefox.
It's a Pro subscription.

(my access here is using a different machine and operating system)

Just to add that when it freezes and goes all white, I just end the Firefox process in Task Manager. Maybe if I waited it would work but just using Chrome for now

OK results of extensive analysis below. I have one crucial piece of info.

11) If you create a new empty Toodledo account using a fake email address, does that cause Firefox to hang?
Works fine [email protected]
BUT if I do an XML export of my 210 tasks from my normal account and import them into the test account it freezes whenever I subsequently go in via Firefox. In Internet Explorer I can see them all.

Full analysis

1) What OS are you running?
Vista Business Service Pack 2 32-bit machine
Processor Intel® Core ™ Duo CPU T8300 2.40 Ghz 2.40 Ghz
RAM : 4.00 GB

2) What version of Firefox?
Firefox 3.6.8

3) Does Firefox only hang once and then works perfectly after it recovers?
See my testing below. It does, eventually, come back but freezes again.

4) Does Firefox hang only when signing into the website by pressing the "Sign in" button, or does it also hang after you are already signed in.
I went into Internet Explorer, signed out of Toodledo. Cleard Toodledo cookies from Firefox. Signed in on Firefox. Froze.

5) When Firefox hangs, can you refresh the page? Does it help, or does it hang again?
Totally frozen. Can only close Firefox or go to another window.

6) Can you sign into our mobile website and use it without problems ( http://www.toodledo.com/slim )?
Tried URL IN Firefox – froze.

7) If you delete all your Toodledo cookies and then restart your browser and then sign in again, does it still hang?
Yes

8) If you open the "Tools > Error Console" before visiting Toodledo, do you see any errors appear during the hang?
I see lots of errors, all saying

Unknown property ‘text-overflow’. Declaration dropped.
http://images.toodledo.com//t/includes/views_print9.css line xxx  xxx varies

9) Pro members only. If you access the site via SSL encryption ( https://www.toodledo.com/views/index.php ) do you get the same problem?
Yes

10) If you directly type in the URL for these forums ( http://www.toodledo.com/forums/ ) do you still get Firefox to hang?
It works fine and I can get into the forums but when I select To Do List, it hangs

11) If you create a new empty Toodledo account using a fake email address, does that cause Firefox to hang?
Works fine [email protected]
BUT if I do an XML export of my 210 tasks from my normal account and import them into the test account. It freezes whenever I go in via Firefox. In Internet Explorer I can see them all.

Here is a blow by blow account of a session:

Started PC and loaded Firefox
Clicked on Toodledo link
Toodledo started and, while setting up the ToDo List, it froze as usual
Watched for a couple of minutes then left PC for 2 hours
Returned, switched off screensaver and found that Toodledo was ready to use
(So it came back between 2 mins and 2 hours – not yet sure how long it took)
Refreshed the To Do List – no problem, worked OK
Closed Firefox without signing out of Toodledo
Restarted Firefox
Clicked on Toodledo link
Toodledo started and, while setting up the To Do List, it froze as usual
(Note the ‘white screen’ reported by some people occurs if you click Firefox a second time while it is frozen and the cursor changes from an arrow to an hourglass circle)
After 12 minutes Firefox unfroze and Toodledo was apparently useable with an arrow cursor and the checkboxes complete BUT I clicked on the Firefox ‘Help’ tab to find the version of Firefox for you and it immediately froze again (white screen).
Came back after 18 minutes.
In Toodledo, Clicked To Do List to refresh it – OK, it worked
In Toodledo, Clicked ‘Forums’ – Locked up again for a few moments then appeared to clear the lock and I clicked ‘Forums’ again. It worked.
Clicked on Firefox Help – no problems.
Back in Toodledo, click on To Do list – list appears but when I select a task, it freezes.
Killed Firefox by clicking on top right hand corner.

I have now tried removing tasks from the [email protected] acount using IE then seeing if Firefox hangs.

It's a bit inconclusive. It doesn't seem to be a particular task that I can narrow it down to. Al I can say is that the fewer the total number of tasks, the shorter the 'hang' period. So, with 60 tasks, it 'only' hangs for 20 seconds or so.
